Weighted Companion Cube…err Chain

Some of you may remember my attempts at inlaying video game figures into chainmail squares (http://www.geek-online.com/2007/10/16/chainmaile-video-games/).  I am just that kind of a geek.  I asked myself, “Self, how can I one up this?  How can I improve upon the square?”.  Well the answer was simple go cubic.  What better match for my foray into 3D chainmail sculptures then everyones favorite pefect solid the Weight Companion Cube.  So with no more adue and gilding the lily I present the Weighted Companion Cube… err Chain.  It took countless hours (I watched 5 seasons of X-Files whilest working on it) and approx 3400 3/16 inner diameter bright alumiinum rings. It is approximately 3 1/2 cubed and weighs 387 grams.  So it isn’t much of a weighted companion cube.

Here is a closer look at the actual weave used. It is pretty simple actually. Each set of two rings have eights rings attached to it, two going every 90 degrees.

I am working of a weighted companion cube from Portal. If you don’t know what Portal is I feel sorry for you. Well here is a snap shot of the work so far. Please excuse the poor quality it was taken with a camera phone.  So far the ring count is just over 4000 rings.
